The Founder

Intuit, Inc. ($INTU) was founded by Scott Cook in 1983 in Palo Alto, CA.

Intuit is currently headquartered in Mountainview, CA.

Scott Cook famously sat across from his kitchen table watching his wife struggle to balance their checkbook and he thought, “there has to be a better way.”

History

Intuit started with the launch of its flagship product, Quicken, in 1984. The company sold it to an H.I.G. Capital affiliate in April, 2016.

As Quicken grew in popularity, people started using the product to also manage their small business finances. Scott Cook again realized the opportunity and from Quicken, QuickBooks was born.

The first version of QuickBooks was made for DOS in 1992.

QuickBooks Online was released in 2001 originally to be kept as a simple web based version that people could use for easier collaboration with smaller businesses.

Since 2001 QuickBooks Online has evolved into several versions; QuickBooks Online Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, and Advanced. You can review them and compare prices here.

QuickBooks Online has become one of the most widely used and supported cloud accounting platforms.

Global Technologies

Intuit is a global technology platform, powering prosperity with TurboTax, QuickBooks, Mint, Credit Karma, and Mailchimp (acquired by Intuit in 2021).

The current CEO (as of 2019) is Sasan K. Goodarzi

Over the years since Intuit was formed, they have worked to build a community of accounting professionals as part of their effort in “powering prosperity.” While Intuit is customer focused, they recognize that the accountants who serve their customers are in the best position to understand their customers needs. The accountants are the most trusted advisors among business owners.

Intuit has also launched programs like QuickBooks Live which is aimed at getting the micro businesses who normally would not hire a bookkeeper started with proper bookkeeping so that when they are ready they can hire someone to take over the bookkeeping with a decent set of books to turn over.

Intuit is also consistently rated highly as one of the top companies to work for.
